It will be different for everyone and I presume this will change as they get older. Currently with a 2 and 4-year-old, we don\u2019t like doing a journey longer than around 3 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it is necessary, we like to stop for lunch or find a playground or soft play on route for the children to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/?page_id=919\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"919\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">let off some steam.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"659\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_1366-1024x659.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_1366-1024x659.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_1366-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_1366-767x494.jpg 767w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_1366-1536x989.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_1366-2048x1319.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are doing a UK road trip there are some really descent (and free) soft plays at major service stations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gloucester Services (M5)<\/strong>: Features fantastic indoor and outdoor natural timber play areas, a farm shop, and an outdoor duck pond\/walkway area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tebay Services (M6, Cumbria)<\/strong>: Famous for its farm shop, it offers indoor soft play corners in the kitchens and an outdoor willow play tunnel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rugby Services (M6 Jct 1)<\/strong> features both a free indoor children&#8217;s play barn and a fenced outdoor playground,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Beaconsfield Services (M40, J2)<\/strong>: Includes an outdoor children&#8217;s play area alongside a scenic lakeside terrace and woodland walk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leeds Skelton Lake Services (M1, J45)<\/strong>: Features an indoor kids&#8217; play area and modern family-friendly facilities right next to the lake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Peterborough Services (A1(M), J17)<\/strong>: Equipped with a dedicated outdoor children&#8217;s play area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Welcome Break Rotherham (M1, J33)<\/strong>: Offers a free indoor soft play area alongside arcade and funhouse elements for older kids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ideally, we will actually stay overnight somewhere of interest if it is a particularly long drive, but this is not always viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We always find it best to drive whilst the children sleep and we are incredibly lucky that they often fall asleep on longer journeys or after a particulary hectic day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20240915_170450-1-1024x473.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1867\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20240915_170450-1-1024x473.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20240915_170450-1-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20240915_170450-1-767x354.jpg 767w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20240915_170450-1-1536x709.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20240915_170450-1-2048x946.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am incredibly guilty of <em>really<\/em> wanting to get somewhere and trying to push for more than 3 hours in a car and totally regretting it. It is so stressful and just not an enjoyable way to spend any day, let alone a holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Car rentals with car seats<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If driving abroad, renting a car can be its own minefield. When searching for car hire and adding two car seats, some providers charge extortionate rates or state car seats \u2018when available\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am still so unsure of what this means. Will they let me drive their rental car away with my 3-month-old strapped in with just a seatbelt?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I presume it can only be some legal thing they must state. Like when we tell the Health Visitor we check our smoke alarm every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when I first read it, I was terrified that they would run out and we would be left stranded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have rented plenty of cars across the world and have never been refused a car seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I still rent from companies that state \u2018when available\u2019 and just reassure myself that there will always be another car available from one of the other rental desks if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Items for toddlers on a road trip<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of my favourite travel hacks for travelling with toddlers is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/?page_id=484\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">airplane activity bags.<\/a> I have recently adapted this and created them road trip activity bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3045-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1871\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3045-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3045-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3045-1-767x575.jpg 767w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3045-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3045-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some items can be similar to what you put in the airplane activity bags, especially fidget toys, but remember in a car there is no work surface and little bits will no longer be on the aircraft floor but instead jammed into your gearbox \u2013 OK we are not in the nineties any more but you get the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept of the activity bags is the same. Or they play stop and go if we are on more residential road with traffic lights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Playing games with toddlers whilst driving is difficult because in case you procreated with Albert Einstein \u2013 they can\u2019t read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, we do like to play i-spy \u2013 but with colours instead of letters. Take what your toddler would consume in a year, multiply it by 6 and that should be enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My children love bento boxes with all their favourite snacks in. Yes there may be some spillages, but it keeps them occupied longer and gives them a wider choice of food. Whenever I say we are going somewhere the first thing they ask is if they are having breakfast in the car. Both our children have tablets, call it survival instincts. We do let them have them on road trips but hang them on the backs of the chairs to watch films rather than play games as this can make them car sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My daughter gets car sick quite often, so we now just keep a bowl by her feet. This is also handy when picking up my husband from the pub!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking of bodily fluids, we always pack a travel potty for car trips, even for our 4-year-old as you just don\u2019t know how long the next stop will be. Remember to pack it somewhere accessible for an easy stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Road trips are sometimes a necessary part of a holiday but with these tips they don\u2019t have to be so painful.
