Now it just consists of getting a full night\u2019s sleep!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his 40<sup>th<\/sup>, I surprised him with a trip to Tromso (considered the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights). Covid hit and we never went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When my son was 15 months and daughter 3-years-old, we tried to rebook the trip but needed to make it more kid friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20250131_125136-1-1024x473.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20250131_125136-1-1024x473.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20250131_125136-1-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20250131_125136-1-768x355.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20250131_125136-1-1536x709.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20250131_125136-1-2048x946.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We flew into <strong>Tromso<\/strong>, drove down to <strong>Tjeldsund<\/strong> to stay for a week and then back up to Tromso to spend a few nights before flying back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 3 hour <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-accent-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/?page_id=1667\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drive down with our 15-month-old<\/a> <\/mark>was, quite frankly, hell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He, very conveniently, was going through that phase of hating being in a car seat. This matched with icy, windy roads, after a flight with two kids, was a recipe for disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We thought after flying to Canada, a short haul flight to Norway would be a walk in the park. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/?page_id=180\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"180\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flying with toddlers<\/a> never is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Staying in Tjeldsund fjord with toddlers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hit jackpot with our Airbnb and this find really made Norway one of our most magical trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our accommodation was a typical Norwegian Lakehouse surrounded by mountains and can only imagine it is just as beautiful in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20250129_104907-1-1024x473.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20250129_104907-1-1024x473.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20250129_104907-1-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20250129_104907-1-768x355.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20250129_104907-1-1536x709.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20250129_104907-1.jpg 1540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, this is not a windows screensaver, this was the view from our accomodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the most stunning location, We had the most hospitable host I have ever encountered. Have you ever seen Frozen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading wp-states-2e8eb9c7\">&#8230;Yoo-hoo! Big Summer Blowout!<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, he greeted us with a smile, gave our children some moss to feed the reindeer and invited us in his Lavvu tent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here he taught us all about his way of living, traditions and showed the children some reindeer hooves and fur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the end, my husband awkwardly asked what we owed him as it felt like we had just been on a TUI excursion. He said our host had taken care of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we happily headed back to our car, we saw our host. We asked what we owed <em>him. <\/em>And he merely wanted us to learn about the culture and his country. All this means is you just need your wits about you and be extra vigilant when exploring outside with little ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the reasons I booked this accommodation was because it had a hot tub. I thought our little water babies would love splashing with their toys whilst we look out for fjord wildlife. Do note that most cabin hot tubs are fire-powered, meaning in the cold depths of winter, they will never be warm enough to dip a toe in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the remote location there was also no WIFI, which we actually quite liked as escapism but this did mean the children could not even watch TV whilst eating breakfast. It was a scenic drive through snowy mountains, fjords, and we even saw some reindeer. Plus my train loving husband could geek over the train \u2013 don\u2019t worry \u2013 this unsexy obsession is better contraception than getting a vasectomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My son was only 15-months-old so perhaps older toddlers or mega train obsessed children would be more engaged with this train journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also offer Northern light journeys, but we thought this would be too late and long for our two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After our train journey we strolled around Narvik, found a few gift shops, and a little pizza restaurant that had a small kids play area to keep them entertained whilst we had some lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Viewing the Northern Lights with toddlers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were lucky to see the northern lights on our drive down, from our accommodation and on our flight home from Tromso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another amazing perk of our Airbnb host is he would message us each night to say if you could see the Northern Lights and what direction to view them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When considering a Northern Lights trip with young children I definitely would focus on choosing accommodation where viewing is possible. This way, they can sleep whilst you look out for Aurora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wouldn\u2019t dream of taking my toddlers on an organised Northern Light Excursion as they are just too late and don\u2019t think it would be fair on the other passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renting a car and finding them yourselves is a good option if your children sleep in the car or are good passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are lots of good apps that tell you where the Northern Lights are and their visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were lucky that a few nights, whilst our toddlers were fast asleep, we sat out on the balcony and watched the Aurora dance above us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC01502-1-1-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC01502-1-1-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC01502-1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC01502-1-1-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC01502-1-1-1536x1026.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.toddlertravels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC01502-1-1-2048x1368.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This felt like a truly magical moment that we never thought we could achieve with young children. But making a few tweaks to our original trip meant we could experience a beautiful moment as a couple and expose our children to a stunning new environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t get me wrong, it is still a trip with toddlers. There were still tears, terrors and tantrums. It wasn\u2019t. We only spent a few nights here and thank goodness as it was the worst part of our trip!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is really expensive, including accommodation so we found a basic two bedroom Airbnb. I think our son was auditioning for the remake of The Exorcist.
