Though I feel Universal Orlando rides are more aimed at older thrill-seeking children, I really do think it can be a toddler friendly park and worth at least a day visit whilst in Orlando.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We recently priced up adding Universal to our 14-day Disney World passes but it literally added thousands of pounds. I do not think there is enough attractions for toddlers to justify this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just like Disney, under 3s get in for free so this could make a huge price difference to your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are buying direct, Universal usually only offer 7 or 14 day tickets. I would say this is overkill for a visit with toddlers as you really only need a couple of days here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you buy from a reputable ticket merchant you are able to do just one day or few day hopper tickets which I think is better value. We used Undercover Tourist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have also only ever done Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. I would love to visit Epic Universe one day but every person I know that has been there has complained about the long queues, the heat (due to no shade) and very few attractions suitable for younger children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How long to spend at Universal with toddlers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We allocated one day to do both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. The plan was to go against all my womb instincts and do one really long day in the park (9am \u2013 9pm.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We actually did everything we wanted to do by 5pm. So I definitely think it is manageable to do it all in one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were a few rides that were closed and you may want to stay for the fireworks but they were not on whilst we were there anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was actually something I found really difficult to research before going to Universal: whether the parade or night show was on. During January, it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you choose to do parks on separate days, just note that you cannot board the Hogwarts Express without a park hopper ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our toddlers, though not Harry Potter fans, loved this attraction so do bear this in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When to go to Universal with toddlers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Visiting before your toddler turns 3 can really reduce the cost of your trip but check how many rides they will actually be able to do to see if it is worth waiting until they are a bit older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have the option of visiting during term time this also can cut your trip cost significantly – one of the few perks to having toddlers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are lucky to have flexibility on when you travel, I would consider January-March or September-October. Be sure to check for American holidays, special events (like Halloween or Mardi Gras) and Cheer competitions as this can make the parks busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We recently went in January and although I never thought Florida weather was that diverse, we actually saw snow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this was a freak spell and Florida is usually really hot so avoiding that heat with toddlers is advisable.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to spend your time at Universal Studios<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Islands of Adventure opens earlier, and Universal Studios shuts later so the logical way to spend your day is heading to Islands of Adventure first and then head over to Universal Studios later in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was worried everyone else would do the same, but we headed straight to Dr Suess land and practically walked on every ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another thing to note is that you park at Universal City Walk and it is a good 15-20 minute walk (with toddlers) to either park entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

City Walk is like Universal\u2019s version of Disney Springs and a great place to spend an evening or get some dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Islands of Adventure with Toddlers<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Islands of Adventure consists of: Port of Entry, Suess Landing, The Lost Continent, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmede, Jurassic Park, King Kong Skull Island, Toon Lagoon and Marvel Super Hero Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Port of Entry does what it says on the tin and it is where you start your adventure. It is a nicely themed street lined with overpriced eateries and shops. A bit like Main Street USA in Disney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suess Landing, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Jurassic Park was where we focused our attention as we found these the most toddler friendly. I will discuss further the attractions best for toddlers in these lands below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lost Continent, King Kong Skull Island, Toon Lagoon and Marvel Super Hero Island tend to have more thrill rides and rollercoasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We did walk around Marvel Super Hero Island for some character meets for my son and they also have the spinning ride Storm Force Accelatron <\/strong>with no height requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toon Lagoon is also worth visiting. Although, the cartoons are older ones that my children did not know like Betty Boop and Popeye, they still loved the colourful themeing. Here you will also find the Me Ship, The Olive <\/strong>play area which is great for some free play.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suess Landing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA person\u2019s a person, no matter how small\u201d – Horton<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I am an absolute self-confessed Seuss super fan and, thankfully, my daughter equally loves the whimsically stories of Cat in the Hat, Lorax and the Grinch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was by far my favourite and most toddler friendly area, so it was almost a shame to start the day here. But if your kids are like mine, they wake up buzzing like Ms Rachel on espresso martinis, so could be a good place to burn off that early morning energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caro-Seuss-el<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My kids absolutely loved this ride. Yet, it is just a carousel. We\u2019ve all done 29,000 of them. Yes, it does have Dr Seuss characters on, but they just go round. Still \u2013 no height requirement and generally low queues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I Ran The Zoo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t a ride, but a walkthrough splash play area \u2013 fantastic <\/em>for free play<\/a>. You have to leave your prams outside but it is not far if you need to rush round to the exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In essence, this is just a flying Dumbo style ride but my oh my is it so <\/em>much more. This, my dear friends, is the song you will have stuck in your heads for the rest of the day! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They play an absolute banger of a tune about going up and down and if you don\u2019t control your fish the right direction you get squirted with water. Which is fail proof with toddlers as we all know how well they listen to instructions right? No height limit for this one either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One for slightly older toddlers with a height requirement of 92cm. It was not running due to a fault whilst we were there, but it looked fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cat in the Hat Ride<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now as a toddler parent, if you really miss those nights out where  you stay awake past midnight, no idea where you are, what is real or not, this <\/em>is the ride for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ride will make you feel like you have raided your parent\u2019s alcohol cupboard to mix with a bottle of Lambrini topped with a drag of your mate\u2019s B&H silver; it is\u2026unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our kids loved it – maybe that says more about us as parents – and we actually did it twice. There is a 92cm height requirement for this, almost the same to purchase that bottle of Lambrini! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jokes aside, it is an innocent, zippy ride that goes through the story of the Cat in the Hat. But as soon as you ride it, my description will make perfect sense.<\/p>\n<\/div>

A real highlight of Seuss Landing is the characters and shows. As described below, we found character meetings<\/a> <\/mark>much more straight forward at Universal than Disney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here you can meet all the classic characters such as: The Lorax, Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and 2, The Grinch, and Sam-I-Am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hopefully it was just the Dr Suess cartoon style, but I did think some of the costumes were creepy Temu versions but maybe I have been indoctrinated by the new Mickey and Minnie blinking costumes at Disney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a cute show Oh! The Stories You’ll Hear!\u2122 <\/strong>and again, unlike Disney, you can just rock up to at the start time and sit on the floor and enjoy \u2013 perfect for toddlers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a character meet and greet at the end of the show which saves you finding all those Dr Seuss characters as they are just in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jurassic Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Camp Jurassic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fantastic prehistoric playground for some more free play<\/a>. There are no height restrictions but not many places for non-walkers or dependant toddlers. Still, you can go and explore this play area with them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jurassic Park Discovery Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though listed as a play area this is essential a tiny version of the National History Museum with Dinosaur sculptures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, as huge fans of the film, my husband and I did squeal in excitement as we entered the building as it really did feel like we were in the film! There is also a lift in here for prams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jurassic Park River Adventure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was gutted <\/em>that this was closed during our trip. But I do believe in fate and, from what I have read, this can be really scary for younger children. And remember, they <\/em>are choosing your nursing home. The height requirement is also 107cm.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Jurassic World VelociCoaster<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An adult ride with child swap<\/a><\/mark> and a 130cm height requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pteranodon Flyers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are not many<\/em> advantages to having toddlers. But this is one of them. It has really strange requirements that you have to be over 92cm to ride but have to be with <\/em>someone under 143cm to ride. So basically 2 adults cannot go on this ride. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes! Finally! At the moment when your toddler is screaming bloody murder <\/em>because you opened their yoghurt the wrong way or laying on the supermarket floor kicking and screaming \u2013 you can turn to all of those judgy Karens and say \u201cbut can you ride Pteranoden Flyers at Universal?\u201d Oh the power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Flight of the Hippogriff<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With just a 92cm height requirement, our 2-year-old could actually ride this but the queue consistently, and quite dramatically pushed our 20 minute queue rule<\/a><\/mark>. It looked fantastic for toddlers but the queue never dropped below an hour so maybe just lower your expectations of being able to ride this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hagrid\u2019s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a 122cm height requirement, this is off the cards for toddlers, unless you procreated with the BFG. But every <\/em>person I know that has been to Universal has rated this their top ride so thankfully it does provide child swap<\/mark>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We both chose a ride before flying out that we wanted to use this for and this was mine. However, the queue never reached below 2 hours and I just could not queue for that long!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again an adult ride with child swap<\/a><\/mark> and a 122cm height requirement. Quite spooky for younger children too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hogsmeade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not a ride but a walk-through street that is inspired by the Harry Potter films. I am going to disappoint 94% of the UK population by confessing that I\u2019m not a HP fan\u2026 unless it\u2019s drizzled over my fry up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve never really got into Harry Potter and usually switch the first film off when the snake starts talking. But I hope in the future to try and watch all 922 films. Nevertheless, as a non-fan with very little HP knowledge, the Hogsmeade area was still fantastic to walk around!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top tip: Brain washed tourists spend hundreds of dollars on an interactive wand that make animatronics (incredible animatronics may I add) move in shop windows, etc. around Hogsmede. I bought both my na\u00efve toddlers \u00a31 wands from Temu and as they waved them next to a child doing the same thing they thought they <\/em>were controlling it. You\u2019re welcome\u2026 Universal please don\u2019t chastise me, I\u2019m just a Mum trying to survive.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
Hogwarts Express – Hogsmeade Station<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Please remember you can only board this if you have a Park Hopper Ticket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another thing to note is you can <\/em>take prams on the train. For once during your Orlando vacation this is actually an advantage. You queue for a while with everyone else then there is a lift as everyone else queues up the stairs. You can get to it quite far back in the line but we were really timid and didn\u2019t want to seem like we were pushing in so waited until people way back in the queue went and got the lift. You take it and then you are literally at the front of the line. This is the closest thing I will ever feel to having a Fastpass and let me tell you, it was exhilarating! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When boarding the train, they take your pram (so take anything you need for the very short journey) and put it in another carriage. There is no need to collapse it, for once!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The journey itself is really cool, and my two toddlers were mesmerised, if not a little confused, by the effects. I don\u2019t want to spoil too much!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universal Studios Florida with Toddlers<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
This is the original Universal park in Orlando and the one I remember from childhood visits, however it has changed a lot <\/em>since then. No, unfortunately, the Temu Jaws shark animatronic is no longer here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would say there is equally as much to do in this park for toddlers as Islands of Adventure so if you can only choose one park it will be a tough choice. Maybe wiggle a biscuit and see which one comes to you first?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Universal Studios consists of the lands The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, World Expo, Springfield: Home of the Simpsons, Dreamworks Land, Hollywood, Illumination\u2019s Minion Land, New York and San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is where you enter if you took the Hogwarts Express and you can explore the equally fantastically themed Diagon Alley. Here you will find the famous fire breathing dragon.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
World Expo, New York and San Francisco are nice places for adults to walk around if you find both your children napping. Apart from the Men in Black ride in World Expo and Fast in Furious ride in San Francisco, these are more just well themed areas filled with restaurants, shops and entertainment<\/a>.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Springfield: Home of Simpsons<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite my children having no idea who the Simpsons are, they loved the bright theming and carnival games in this zone. We equally enjoyed the area having been bought up with 4 channels and Simpsons always <\/em>being on after school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are two rides in this area. The Simpsons Ride<\/strong> has a 102cm height requirement so only suitable for older toddlers. Because of this, I still don\u2019t actually know what this ride is but from research it looks like a 3D Motion ride that simulates a rollercoaster with the Simpson characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl <\/strong>is a spinning ride with no height requirement so suitable for all. All without a hangover, but after having kids who gets those any more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dreamworks Land<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This was our favourite area in Universal Studios for our toddlers with plenty of toddler friendly attractions, character meets<\/a> <\/mark>and entertainment.<\/a><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here you will find the DreamWorks Imagination Celebration <\/strong>show which is an absolute must with toddlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On a small stage, two of Ms Rachel\u2019s offspring take children through a journey on how to be a better friend and have visits from favourite characters like: Kong Fu Panda, Poppy from Trolls, Shrek and Madagascar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is such a bright and happy show with songs, dancing and props that kept both my children engaged from start to finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you can only make one show at Universal with toddlers, make sure this is it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trolls Trollercoaster<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
My daughter loved this roller coaster so <\/em>much that the ride attendant let us ride it all again without queuing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a 92cm height requirement, it is suitable for older toddlers and my 2-year-old was fine on it, it was not too fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is also an ice cream stop near here that sells Troll ice creams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do make sure you do this after <\/em>the rollercoaster though.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Play areas in Dreamworks Land<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Other than the Trollercoaster, this land mainly consisted of interactive play areas which our toddlers loved and is also fantastic for a bit of free play.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
The larger areas include Poppy\u2019s Playground <\/strong>and Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp <\/strong>which is actually a water play area. You can go in clothes but just make sure to take spare. This can be really nice to cool down if you are visiting in the height of Florida summer.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is also King Harold’s Swamp Symphony <\/strong>which is really just lily pads that you jump on and make the frogs sing but my son absolutely loved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here you will also find a unique meet and greet with Donkey and Shrek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other character meets<\/a><\/mark> in this area include Gabby and King Julien or – like my daughter calls any lemur – a ‘move it’!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hollywood<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
This feels like the central hub of Universal Studios with plenty of entertainment and characters adding to the bustling atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the moment, there is also a Wicked walk through full of memorabilia which my daughter (and I) really enjoyed. I am unsure how long this will remain but am sure it will be replaced with something even ‘goodlier’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to all the shops and restaurants, there are two shows: The Bourne Stuntacular <\/strong>and Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show – <\/strong>which I didn\u2019t even attempt with my toddlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bourne Stuntacular <\/strong>is the best stunt show I have ever seen and one of the best shows in all of the theme parks I have visited. Without spoiling anything, I think I enjoyed it so much because it is so different to anything I have watched before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think the only way we managed to enjoy it is because my son fell asleep, I don\u2019t think he would have sat for that long otherwise. My 4-year-old daughter, however, remained engaged as there is a lot going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before you enter the stage area, you are forced to watch an introduction video which felt longer than my 36 hour labour. There are no seats so you must stand and my son had already fell asleep so I was holding him the whole time. Considering he eats about 26 cookies a day this was not good for my back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hollywood is also home to what I remember to be my favourite ride when I was a child and, thankfully – or maybe not, it has not changed one bit…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
E.T. Adventure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though it is classed to be in Hollywood in the map it is actually just near the entrance to Dreamworks Land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a height requirement of 87cm, most toddlers will be able to ride it. The carriage and seats are like tandem bikes so a bit of balance is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You fly through the dark story of ET which could be a bit scary for some children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I remember my absolute highlight being ET saying your name at the end of the ride but, rather disappointingly, when it came to our family it sounded like he sneezed instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Illuminations Minion Land<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
This is another toddler friendly area and, if you own a pair of noise cancelling headphones, I recommend watching the Minion films before you visit Universal as this got my children really excited about this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illumination\u2019s Villain-Con Minion Blast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
This could be one of my favourite rides at Universal because it was so different to any ride I have done before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is a shooting ride, but you are standing the whole time on a moving conveyor belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although this added such an exciting element to the ride, it also added a bit of a squeaky bum element as my toddler was a bit wobbly on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is no height requirement, but you are not allowed to hold children on the ride either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also make sure you ask for a smaller \u2018blaster\u2019 for the children so it is easier for them to hold.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
Despicable Me Minion Mayhem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
This ride has a 102cm height requirement, so we have never actually ridden this. The concept is moving seats in front of a screen but until my toddlers eat more of their greens, I can\u2019t give an opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Character interactions at Universal feel very different from Disney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It feels like there are more characters free roaming around the lands, interacting with guests and providing entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The queues for characters are also significantly shorter at Universal than Disney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, I think this is because interactions are much shorter and less personable. Staff make sure people get a quick photo and are moved on quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We didn\u2019t attempt to get any autographs, apart from Gabby as my daughter is obsessed with her. But all we were offered was a stamp. I am not sure if this is for all the characters or again just to save time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The character meets aren\u2019t clearly advertised so make sure you download the app and try to work out where the character areas are.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The is also a TikTok famous raptor encounter which looked brilliant but always had such a long queue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Entertainment & shows at Universal for Toddlers<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
At Universal, there is always something to see, hear or \u2013 if you\u2019re a toddler \u2013 lick. There’s a lot of entertainment just dotted around the park; check the app to see when and where this takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unfortunately whilst we were here in January, there was no parade or fireworks show but the CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular <\/strong>is supposed to be incredible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DreamWorks Imagination Celebration <\/strong>is our top pick for toddler shows at Universal.  <\/strong>This short but engaging show includes singing and dancing with favourite characters like Kong Fu Panda, Poppy, Shrek and King Julien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh! The Stories You’ll Hear!<\/strong> was a close second favourite for toddlers. This is a fantastic show for toddlers where you can just turn up to at the start time and sit on the floor and enjoy. It also ended with a Dr Suess character meet and greet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Animal Actors On Location! <\/strong>I think you haven\u2019t really been to a theme park abroad if you haven\u2019t seen a live animal show. My toddlers stayed engaged during this show and it was humorous in places. It did have some animals that have starred in some decent shows, so well-known that I totally can\u2019t remember now what but I remember being impressed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Frog Choir: <\/strong>My son must have had an obsession with frogs this day as he was mesmerised by these singing frogs as well as King Harold’s Swamp Symphony. <\/strong>This was a well-produced show that you could just watch for a bit of and walk away without any pressure of toddlers getting bored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As previously mentioned, The Bourne Stuntacular <\/strong>is an absolutely fantastic stunt show but not necessarily toddler friendly as it is so long. I would still attempt to do this but sit near an aisle if you need a quick escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I really recommend tagging at least one day at Universal to your Florida trip<\/a> as it was a welcome break from Disney.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
